Escape an outback dunny — in the middle of the city

Locked in the outback dunny of unhinged Aussie celebrity Huge Axeman, you have 60 minutes of fading daylight to escape and radio for help.

In short: In The Dunny you slip away from a tour of celebrity Huge Axeman’s outback property to use his old dunny. Then the door slams shut and locks. With one hour of daylight left, your team has to escape and radio for help before the bush turns deadly.

Nature calls, so you’ve slipped away from your tour group in search of a restroom.

Unfortunately, the only toilet on the tour of celebrity Huge Axeman’s house is the old dunny out the back. Ever since the man himself went crazy and took to the bush several years ago, its door has stayed shut.

With a little force you pry it open just far enough to slip through and use the long drop inside.

Sitting silently in the fading light, you’re almost finished your business when something rustles outside. You sit up to take a cautious look — and the door slams shut.

Your greatest fears are realised: it’s locked. With only an hour of sunlight left you’ll need to work quickly to escape and make it back to your friends. Otherwise, like the Axeman himself, you may disappear forever…

You have one hour to escape.

The Dunny is a uniquely Aussie adventure room. You’ll hear cicadas and the whistling outside, and the light fades as the clock runs down. The jokes are as broad as the outback.

FAQ

The Dunny story: what people ask

What is The Dunny escape room?

The Dunny is a 60-minute adventure escape room produced by Escape This. Players are locked inside the outback outhouse of Huge Axeman, a fictional and unhinged Aussie celebrity, and must solve puzzles to escape and radio for help before daylight runs out. It plays in Sydney at Manly Beach and in the Perth CBD.

What is a dunny?

“Dunny” is Australian slang for a toilet, traditionally an outdoor outhouse or “long drop” out the back of a bush property. The Dunny escape room recreates one: a weathered timber outback outhouse that you have to escape from.

Who is Huge Axeman?

Huge Axeman is the fictional, somewhat unhinged Aussie celebrity at the centre of The Dunny’s story. Several years ago he went crazy and took to the bush, and his old dunny door has stayed shut ever since — until you prise it open on a tour of his property and it slams shut behind you.

Is The Dunny scary?

The Dunny is equal parts creepy and hilarious rather than a horror room. Expect fading light, periods of darkness, the odd jump scare and plenty of outback humour, but no crawling, confined spaces or smoke effects. Families play it all the time.

Is The Dunny like Wolf Creek?

The Dunny is a hit with Wolf Creek fans. It shares the lonely outback setting and the sense that someone is out there with an axe, but it is an adventure escape room played as much for laughs as for tension, not a horror experience.

What makes The Dunny different from other escape rooms?

The Dunny is uniquely Australian. You play inside a full-scale outback outhouse, with cicadas buzzing, someone whistling “Waltzing Matilda” and an axe thwacking outside while the daylight fades. It is designed, built and run by Escape This — Australia’s largest escape room operator, with its own escape room design studio and factory — and every booking is private to your group.

What should we wear to The Dunny? Can we dress up?

Wear closed footwear. Costumes are encouraged: come as Steve Irwin, an outback ringer or an international backpacker, as long as your shoes are closed. There are bonus points for the best Aussie accent.
